The BCCI is torn between Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane for the role of Test captain.

The Indian team will begin their campaign against New Zealand on November 17, with a three-match Twenty20 International series followed by two tests. From November 25, the two cricketing giants will compete in the game's purest form. In light of recent events, the BCCI is grappling with who to appoint as India's Test captain.
 
It is well known that Indian captain Virat Kohli relieved himself of some of his responsibilities by stepping down as T20I captain after the T20 World Cup in 2021. And, according to the BCCI's team announcement, star batter Rohit Sharma will lead the charge in T20Is. Kohli, on the other hand, remains the undisputed leader of the team in Tests.
 
Due to their hectic schedule over the last six months, BCCI is looking forward to resting some of their senior players. Given that the Indian team has been on the road for the past six months, the announced T20I lineup against New Zealand does not include players like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and others. The first Test after the T20Is is scheduled for Kanpur, and Kohli is expected to miss that match.
 
There is now a conflict between Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane, the Test vice-captain. It remains to be seen whether the BCCI would go with Rahane, who has been Kohli's deputy for many years and is a regular member of the format, or Sharma, who has only just established himself in the game's longest format.
 
Rahane has also been in poor form recently, while Sharma continues to fly high with his bat. The new Indian head coach, Rahul Dravid, will begin his duties on this tour alone, and his opinion would be considered while selecting the Test skipper in Kohli's absence.
 
Kohli will begin his responsibilities with the second Test in Mumbai, followed by a full-fledged tour of South Africa. The second Test between India and New Zealand will be held in Wankhede Stadium from December 3 to 7.
