Finally, the IPL 2022 has started to chart its way. Both of the new franchises that were intended to sign their major stars have made their purchases public. In total, 1214 participants from all over the world have registered for the mammoth 2022 auction.
For a few teams, though, the auction event is equally crucial in selecting their new leaders. Some franchises will go to any length to secure heavyweights like Shreyas Iyer, David Warner, and Eoin Morgan, who are still available. So, let's have a look at this list:
1. Royal Challengers Bangalore
After the departure of Virat Kohli, RCB's captaincy options have become very limited. Bangalore will use a fresh face for its leadership for the first time after the IPL 2013. Initially, ABD, Maxwell, and even Yuzi Chahal were thought to be at the helm, but none of them appear to be the solutions.
That is why RCB will target both Shreyas Iyer and David Warner as top prospects. Both are proven captains who can start a new chapter in the franchise's history with ease. Especially if Shreyas Iyer is offered a lucrative contract, he has the potential to overtake King Kohli as the second most powerful man in the country.
Overall, with the red army also needing to find a significant replacement for ABD, bagging Iyer appears to be a viable option. As a result, it won't be surprising if RCB goes all out to sign a heavyweight for its reign.
2. Kolkata Knight Riders
KKR's short time with captain Morgan was, to say the least, bittersweet. Morgan failed to qualify KKR for the IPL 2020 playoffs. In IPL 2021, the Englishman led the franchise to the finals in the second half. His own batting form in the IPL 2021, however, sparked several questions about his selection.
Perhaps that's why, when it came to his prospective retention, the southpaw was also passed up. Perhaps in IPL 2022, the purple army will be able to either reclaim Morgan or cast a new face. So far, with the departure of the young Shubman Gill, Kolkata will look to recruit a stalwart for the long haul.
Both Warner and Shreyas Iyer might be outstanding leaders for KKR if their needs are met. Even the young Ishan Kishan might be chosen as the franchise's future face. Overall, it wouldn't be surprising if veterans like Ashwin or Shikhar Dhawan took charge of KKR, especially given their track record of success.
3. Punjab Kings
In IPL 2022, it will be a new beginning for PBKS. Regrettably, their former captain, KL Rahul, has now relocated. Punjab has retained the fewest players again again before the blockbuster auction. Though Mayank Agarwal is the frontrunner to manage Punjab, the franchise will undoubtedly try to expand its horizons.
Punjab may be able to sign a dependable cricketer like David Warner because they have the most money among all IPL teams. Warner, being a fiery individual, has the potential to completely rewrite the team's history. With this team, the southpaw who is recognised for getting the most out of little resources at SRH can use a similar strategy.
Even other heavyweights like Shreyas Iyer can give PBKS a fresh lease of life. As a youthful captain, he may assemble an amazing team around him, just as DC did. Hopefully, the Punjab team's fortunes would be changed forever by this huge sale.
4. Chennai Super Kings
CSK, being a renowned IPL team, is still led by MS Dhoni's outstanding services. Captain Cool is expected to retire after the IPL 2021 season, and the IPL 2022 season could be his final participation. Chennai, on the other hand, may look to the huge auction for captaincy material to fill his colossal shoes.
CSK may be able to experiment with players like Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja at the moment. However, because it is a mega auction, they may be able to bring in some additional credible contenders to the table. Though they won't be able to offer huge agreements because to their limited funds, athletes like Ishan Kishan could be a good fit.
In fact, with other stalwarts like Bravo and Du Plessis nearing the end of their careers, CSK will need to bring in some youthful blood in the IPL 2022. As a result, the yellow army will undoubtedly be seen signing dynamic individuals in some capacity.
5. Sunrisers Hyderabad
Regrettably, the IPL 2021 results have forced adjustments in the SRH setup. From the IPL 2022 onwards, its former captain David Warner may not be able to play for Hyderabad. Even when it comes to player retention, SRH has kept two uncapped players.
However, while Kane Williamson will be the captain, Hyderabad will be able to secure a capable deputy for him. The orange army may easily procure Shreyas Iyer with a large purse of INR 68 crore. Otherwise, combining Williamson with seasoned names such as Eoin Morgan or Shikhar Dhawan could be a fun option. In such a case, the team may be able to repurchase its strongest hero (David Warner).
SRH's recruitment will become increasingly reliant on the team's new management structure. Fans can only hope that previous masters like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Sandeep Sharma will be resurrected.
