While on one hand, Team India will face the finals in the World Test Championship, on the other, the Indian second tier team will tour Sri Lanka. Dhawan, who is currently the captain of the second team, will lead the squad. Many senior cricketers in fact made room for young cricketers who excelled in the IPL. In this regard, Rahul Dravid, who is the coach for the team, made some interesting comments.
Dravid commented, “I will give an opportunity to every player who is on the Sri Lankan tour. In my view, the final team is not 11, but 15.” He even recalled saying the same thing when he was coaching the Under-19 team few years ago. The idea seems to have sprung from the fact that Rahul, during his early cricketing days, when he did not get a chance to play after being selected for a series, felt terrible.
The feeling was so awful, it could not be put into words. It left him with a bad taste in his mouth. That’s the reason why Dravid wouldn’t want a similar thing happening to his players.
He said only 15 or 20 players would be selected for a tour. Among them, only 11 people will play the match. However, he categorically told the players that they should prove their mettle to be among the 11. He said, “Earlier, the supporting staff on the team was not full-fledged. Now, there are wickets for cricketers, coaches in all disciplines and fitness assistants. This was not the case when we were playing.” He also added that the quest to play came with passion and we all learned many things here.
Dhawan was selected as the captain and Bhuvneshwar Kumar as the vice-captain for the Lanka tour. The team also includes top IPL players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devdat Padikkal, Manish Pandey, Nitish Rana, Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya. Young India will play three ODIs and three T20Is in this tour.
