The Asia Cup T20 tournament, which was purportedly to be held in Sri Lanka this coming June, has suddenly been cancelled. Ashley DeSilva, Sri Lanka’s Cricket Chief Executive, announced that the mammoth tournament would not be organised in the backwash of the corona epidemic in Sri Lanka. He assured; the tournament would be held after the conclusion of the ODI World Cup in 2023. Actually, Pakistan must have played a host to this tournament. However, as a result of the tense situation between India and Pakistan, Team India players were strictly prohibited to tour Pakistan. Consequently, the tournament got shifted to Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board, in the wake of a sharp rise in corona cases in Sri Lanka over the past few days, has taken up this decision. After the conclusion of the T20 World Cup, Team India wanted to display its cricketing prowess in the mega-tournament. However, Sri Lanka Cricket Board has decided to cancel the tournament.
The Asian Cricket Council, headed by BCCI Secretary Jai Shah, has not made any official announcement as of now. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan authorities identified a new type of corona virus that could spread through the air in their country.
It is also believed that it is rapidly expanding compared to the types already found here. It could survive in the gall for almost an hour, said Neelika Malavige, Head of the Immunology Department at Sri Jayewardenepura University. He explained that recently numerous young people in the country have been affected by the corona epidemic. This new variant may be the reason for the increase in cases.
