A man on Tuesday while digging the foundation for his home at Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh stumbled upon a treasure trove of jewellery worth Rs 25 lakh. But the police say that he cannot own it, as per PTI reports. The police came and seized the jewellery -- 650 gm of gold and 4.53 kg of silver ornaments - as it appeared to be over 100 years old.

"The authorities seized as the person in whose possession had no relevant documents with him," said Priyadarshi. The police came to know about the jewellery after news spread like wildfire. The man, who explored the jewellery, initially declined the news but later admitted having unearthed it, they said.

Any jewellery or costly metal found from the earth is legally termed as "treasure" and is directly governed by the Indian Treasure Trove Act, 1878. Under section 4 of the Act. And the finder of a "treasure" is supposed to bring this to the notice of the district revenue officer.
