OTT also known as Over The Top is film and television content provided via a High-speed internet connection instead of it being relayed through cable or a satellite provider.
The most famous OTT applications in India are Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar and more. In recent times these apps have come under the scanner where cases have been filed against certain web-series and shows in these apps where the content was either seen hurting religious sentiment or that there is no self-regulation for the obscenity that is being shown in the web-series and shows.
Recently a government official who had spoken to a news organization had expressed the need to rethink regulating OTT platforms due to the rising complaints growing over online streaming shows by certain sections of the society especially web-series’ like Mirapur, Sacred Games and The Family Man.
As of now the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting does not have any plan to impose any regulation yet but it looks likely that the government will take into consideration to regulate OTT platforms and get all the formal approvals to take a decision quickly.
